NERRS System-Wide Monitoring

Protocols of the NERRS System-Wide Monitoring Program were implemented to analyze the long-term change and short-term variability of nutrient, water quality, and meteorological conditions.

  • Nutrient data (ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, and chloride, plus suspended sediment and chlorophyll) have been collected at all Reserve component sites since 1991. Changes in nutrient concentrations detected over this time period have been used to direct research and guide management decisions.
  • Water quality data (depth, dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, salinity, pH, turbidity, and chlorophyll) have been monitored since 1995 using dataloggers (YSI 6600 sondes) deployed at one station at the Norrie Point Environmental Center, and at four stations within the Tivoli Bays component site. Two tidal freshwater wetlands, Tivoli North Bay and Tivoli South Bay, and their primary upland tributaries, Stony Creek and Saw Kill Creek respectively, were selected so that the relative importance of stream flow and tidal exchange can be determined.

  • Meteorological data (air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, precipitation, photosynthetically active radiation, and wind speed and direction) helps provide ancillary data to the water quality conditions simultaneously recorded, increasing the understanding of the relationships between the atmospheric conditions and aquatic environments at this site. The meteorological conditions have been monitored since 1999 at two stations in proximity to the Tivoli Bays and Norrie Point water quality stations.

 

Water quality and meteorological data are transmitted in real time through the NERRS Centralized Data Management Office website and through the Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System, a river-wide monitoring collaborative.
