Science on the River – September 14, 2019

The Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve will celebrate the beginning of National Estuaries Week (NEW) during our “Science on the River” open house. Scientists from the Research Reserve, Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and other regional research organizations will be on hand to answer questions about and demonstrate techniques for studying the Hudson River.

Each presentation will feature demonstrations and activities for young and old alike, including:

· Enjoying a live birds of prey program with wildlife rehabilitator Annie Mardiney;

· Catch live fish in the Hudson waters;

· Learning how organisms living in a stream indicate its health;

· Tie your own fly for fishing;

· Canoe on the estuary and tributaries;

· See local high school and college student research poster presentations; and

· Collect and analyze samples of microplastics pollution from the Hudson River

Young visitors will also be able to explore the river in the wet classroom, through a variety of crafts and hands-on activities.

The canoe and kayak launch on the Kidd Lane access road at Tivoli Bays WMA is closed for renovations until further notice.
