HRNERR Sites

HRNERR Sites

The Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve (HRNERR) consists of four tidal wetland sites along the Hudson River Estuary: Stockport Flats in Columbia County, Tivoli Bays in Dutchess County, and Piermont Marsh and Iona Island in Rockland County. Together, these four sites protect over 4800 acres of Hudson River habitat and are used for research, stewardship, education, and recreation. Visitors can hike, observe wildlife, and also explore these sites through the NYS DEC’s free educational canoe trips.

Norrie Point Environmental Center

The administrative offices of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve are located at the Norrie Point Environmental Center within Mills-Norrie State Park in Staatsburg, NY. Norrie Point is open to visitors Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, and occasionally on weekends during public education programs. The facility maintains conference and classroom space, interpretive exhibits (including numerous fish tanks), a research lab, and a weather station. In order to reduce our carbon footprint, we’ve tightened up our “building envelope” by installing foam insulation, energy efficient lights, new siding, and solar panels. Norrie Point is a great place to visit to check out the exhibits and hike the extensive trails of the surrounding state park.

Construction Update!

Construction work on rebuilding the roof and ceiling is ongoing at Norrie Point Environmental Center. Norrie Point is sealing its building envelope by installing a new roof with better insulation. There will be limited access to the building until late fall. Although the interpretive information and tanks with live fish and turtles have been moved, the fishing pier and deck (pictured below) are still open to the public.
